The Process and Making of the Killspencer Veil by James Jean OVM iPhone Case

Created for the launch of James Jean‘s new accessories collection under the James Jean OVM label, the Los Angeles-based artist and designer teamed up with Killspencer for the Killspencer Veil by James Jean OVM iPhone Case. Constructed out of brown rosewood for the iPhone 4/4S as well as the iPhone 5, the piece features Jean’s “Strata Coil” design front and center. Laser etched into the wood by the artist himself at his workshop, the design is then painted over in metallic gold before being hand-finished for added depth and clarity. Retailing for $100 USD, the unique iPhone case is now available exclusively from Lane Crawford.

Paleodictyon
A project by Simon Geilfus, Yannick Jacquet and Thomas Vaquié
Centre Pompidou Metz, France, October 6th 2012

> You can go and watch the making of the project at vimeo.com/60209340

Loosely inspired by the work and research of deep-sea expert Peter A. Rona, the piece abolishes notions of scale by contrasting micro-architecture with human construction.
Fascinated by the marks left by unknown creatures called Paleodictyon Nodosum, the scientist offers the hypothesis that these hexagonal structures are designed in order to cultivate bacteria.

A modern day Captain Nemo, Peter A. Rona wanders relentlessly across the seabed looking to discover these living creatures, of which we only know of their mysterious geometrical makeup, reminiscent of the Centre Pompidou’s hexagonal shape frame.

Fragile Territories in Nantes November 2012 from Robert Henke

Fragile Territories in Nantes November 2012 from Robert Henke on Vimeo.

Fragile Territories is a laser and sound installation by Robert Henke.

Complex visual shapes emerge, drawn on a 30 meter wide wall by four fast moving laser beams, constantly changing motions of pure light. Sounds – transformed recordings of a piano – fill the room, sometimes in sync with the visual aspects and sometimes running simply in parallel. Whilst everything is floating and happening in rather long intervals, a constant black shadow is moving in front of the projection, from left to right, every 4.2 seconds, like a giant blade of a windmill, a negative object that contrasts the bright projection by muting it where it appears. It is not only obscuring the image but also dampening the sounds at its current position and emitting a low frequency noise itself. A dark strong force that puts the rest in an infinitely distant background.

The video has been recorded on the last day of the exhibition, on January 6 2013. Sound is taken directly from the audio interface and edited and layered to provide a good impression of the atmosphere in the exhibition space. While the installation runs, the visual and the auditive component are created in realtime using statistic and stochastic algorithms. As a result, the duration of the work is infinite and it never repeats. Due to the complex nature of the code and its embedded randomness, it is quite impossible to predict future states. However, there are rules within the program that ensure certain states do not let the installation ‘explode’ or ‘fade away’ but instead always guides it back to a more or less stable state after it reaches certain boundaries. The installation runs on three Mac Mini computers, two for the four lasers and one for sound, code written in MaxMSP.

The installation has been made possible with the generous support by Laser Animation Sollinger (laseranimation.com) Used laser sources: Blizzard 5000

NIGEL SYLVESTER X CASIO G-SHOCK GD-101NS-1JR WATCH

At a young age, BMX rider Nigel Sylvester looked to legends such as Edwin De La Rosa, Dave Mirra, Matt Hoffman and others for inspiration. But to truly perfect his style of riding, he needed to look no further than the driveway of his grandmother’s home, where Sylvester learned to ride at the age of five. Be it a park bench, a fire hydrant, red light at a traffic stop, or a speeding yellow cab, Sylvester utilized all that New York City has to offer, the good, the bad, and the ugly, to hone his skill sets.

To celebrate its longtime partnership with the rider hailed from Queens, Casio G-Shock will be introducing its second collaboration model with Nigel Sylvester, the Casio G-Shock GD-101NS-1JR Watch. With some semblances to Sylvester’s first G-Shock collab, the GD-100NS-7, the new timepiece also include a tonal black “safari” finish on its band. In all black with a reverse white LED display, several silver accents around the round readouts refer to wheels on a BMX bike.

Part of Casio G-Shock February 2013 Collection, the Nigel Sylvester x Casio G-Shock GD-101NS-1JR Watch will be available through select retail locations very soon.

The Eternal Jungle – Hermès by Zim & Zou

The animals in “The Eternal Jungle” were made from leftover bits of Hermès leather. Thibault Zimmermann, of French art studio Zim & Zou, explained to Co.Create how it was all done.

It started with the “Leather Parrot,” the bird bust created with leftover offcuts from Hermès workshops by artists/designers Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann of French art studio Zim & Zou. Based on the duo’s “Cabinet de Curiosités” project, the luxurious fashion brand commissioned a single, meticulously arranged parrot for an exhibition arranged by designer Hilton McConnico.

Looking at the finished Leather Parrot, it’s no mystery why the brand wanted to go further with the idea. “When we talked to Hermès, they said we had carte blanche, with no real recommendations other than highlighting their products and conveying the same values,” Zimmerman says. “We were very happy to have some freedom in a project like that, so we had a lot of fun working on it.”

The artist and her creative partner Thomas make the animals by hand.

Course: Eye,Robot : Introduction to Robotics
“Eye, Robot” focuses on the intersection of computation, robotic fabrication, and cinematography. The course explores robotic motion control as a creative medium for designers, mainly through the use of the custom robotic animation software platform, designed specifically for the SCI-Arc Robot House. The platform has the unique ability for the designer not only to design motion, but also to program, simulate, and speculate all at the same time. This type of animation space suspends the distinction between simulation, speculation, and ‘the real’, making it very hard for one to determine which is which while questioning traditional notions of architectural representation.

Pool Party from Red Paper Heart

Pool Party from Red Paper Heart on Vimeo.

UrbanDaddy challenged us to create a memorable interactive experience in water. Our desire was to create animations that party-goers could swim through. Initially we had no idea how to make this a reality.

Pools are not exactly the most projection ready surface, and initial brainstorms produced many more challenges than we had anticipated. In researching a solution, we had to overcome the fact that projection doesn’t work on the surface of water, it becomes distorted if you project through it, and pool parties are notorious for more standing than swimming. To make something truly interactive, we needed to get everyone in that pool!

We reacted as any any normal person would, and promptly put in and order for 65,000 ping pong balls, enough to cover the entire surface of the pool. To go with our new screen, we created an application which mapped to the pool and displayed a floating river of graphics, pulled by an invisible tide. Audio reactive visuals bumped along with the various dj’s and musical acts taking place poolside. The tactile quality of swimming through ping pong balls, combined with animated colors and light created an interactive event worth telling stories about.

Cubepix Demo Test – by Xavi’s Lab from Glassworks Barcelona on Vimeo.

Cubepix by Xavi’s Lab

Xavi’s Lab, the Special Projects division of Glassworks Barcelona, have created some pretty cool stuff but this time they have surpassed themselves.

We are very proud to present Cubepix, a fully interactive and real-time 4D projection mapping package. It has been conceived and developed entirely by our resident Spanish tech-genius Xavi Tribo, always at the forefront of emerging technologies and wizardry.

Shown here in prototype form, it has been devised using a secret recipe of Xavi’s, combining a projector, a Microsoft Kinect, 8 Arduino boards, 64 servo motors, 64 cardboard boxes and bucket-loads of brainpower.

Using all of the above, users are able to interact and influence the way the boxes move and are illuminated. Not only that, the software knows how and when the boxes are going to turn and projects onto them accordingly. The results are stunning and great fun.

The film below is just (we say just, it’s pretty damn cool) Xavi’s prototype but its potential for use in interactive and experiential advertising is really exciting. Glassworks always strives to be at the forefront of new and exciting ways these cutting-edge technologies (in this instance, conceived by Glassworks) can further and excite the industry we work in.

Adobe CS6 Stinger Video / Animation 3:1 ratio from Studio B Films on Vimeo.

Adobe’s launch of CS6 and The Creative Cloud represents a huge paradigm shift for their whole creative suite line. To celebrate this re-thinking of the creative process, they reached out to some incredible artists to develop imagery for each product and each Suite family. When they came to Studio B Films to develop a stinger animation to introduce The Creative Cloud and CS6, they brought along all of the stunning artist imagery and a wide open playground for us to visually tell the launch story and inspire the audience. Early on it became clear that this piece shouldn’t be like previous launch videos. We stripped out any demo or specific feature aspect of the show to make it conceptual and to really honor the artistry that went into the imagery and the products themselves. Special thanks to Devin Earthman and Michael Rigley for their stunning motion design and animation awesomeness on the piece. And Johnny Random’s killer audio track brings it from subtle and understated to an explosive finale. Creative Direction by Aaron Barry. Produced by Jane Selle Morgan.

Archipelago II Emmet Rock | 2012

The eternal affirmation of the spirit of man, is not just a facet of the Archipelago tables, but a defining principle of Mr Rocks design philosophy. The simple composition of stone and glass, created with clever methods of manufacture carves out a future of fantastical forms used in new ways.. It is an opposition to the intolerance of clean design, prejudice of simplicity and narrowness of mind. The astonishing freedom of the design language showcased assails conventional moral properties, such as what is a coffee table, social stratifications and social divisions.

Aitor Throup Unveils New Object Research

After nearly six years of process, celebrated multi-disciplinary conceptual designer Aitor Throup unveiled his very first ready-to-wear collection to the eagerly anticipating eyes of the fashion world. Throup first made an impression at London Fashion Week in 2007 and has infused a variety of influences along the way to present his newest project: New Object Research. The release, which took place at London’s King’s Cross Gallery, is half-installation, half-fashion show. Infusing a highly utilitarian and technical aesthetic with his passionate attention to the human anatomy (Throup created the model mannequins himself), the new collection seems expertly designed to the natural movements of the body. In addition, there is a certain sportswear influence about the line, but as with much of Throup’s work, there is no definitive interpretation of the pieces.

Fragment 2013

Fragment is a site specific installation that investigates our (in)ability to correctly interpret the surrounding environment. The work continues the studio’s ongoing study into scientific models of nature and their experiments in utilising light as a formable material.

421 octahedron frames are assembled to form an inverted pyramid, suspended in a day-lit atrium, catching and reflecting light downwards into the space. Artificial white light is animated within the structure to create fragmented images; shapes that allude to real world illusions such as a desert mirage or fata morgana.
